Perplexity AI’s Comet browser was first released on July 9, 2025, initially available exclusively to subscribers of the $200/month Perplexity Max plan. Following a three-month limited rollout, the browser has been made freely accessible to all users on October 2, 2025, after millions joined the waitlist during the initial release period.

Comet integrates a real-time assistant that can summarise articles, answer questions, suggest related links, search within pages, and manage tabs automatically. The platform also includes themed tools such as Discover for news recommendations, Spaces for organising projects, Shopping for price comparisons, Travel for flight and hotel planning, Finance for budgeting and investment tracking, and Sports for live scores and schedules.

A paid tier, called Max, offers access to more advanced AI models, an enhanced email assistant, meeting scheduling, and a “background assistant” that runs tasks automatically, including inbox organisation and reminders.

The release comes as competition in the browser market intensifies. While Chrome, Safari and Edge continue to dominate, new AI-based alternatives such as The Browser Company’s Dia and a forthcoming OpenAI browser are seeking market share. Perplexity plans regular updates to Comet, aiming to position it as a productivity-focused alternative to established platforms.
